PROJECT
STORY

The San Francisco State University Student Recreation and Wellness Center is a new 118,700 square-foot building offering students, faculty, and staff access to world-class sport, fitness, and recreation facilities. The wellness center, which was built to LEED Platinum standards, opemed in May of 2017.

The building is two-stories with the upper floor designated for individual fitness activities, and the lower floor for team based sports, locker rooms, and staff offices. The fitness center boasts an Olympic-sized natatorium with both lap and recreation pools, an indoor climbing wall that serves as a focal point to the main entrance, an elevated running track, multi activity court (MAC), and a two-court gymnasium. The building offers tall ceilings, open space, and natural lighting that give the Recreation Center a fresh and positive feel.

The design of the center is very functional. The elevated running tracks wrap around the basketball courts and MAC on the second the floor and space is maximized with staff offices neatly tucked in between lockers, multi-function rooms, and various closets.

Raymond was brought onto the SFSU project by C.W. Driver, and provided the metal stud framing, drywall, lath & plaster, and fireproofing. About a quarter of the way into construction, the interior of the wellness center was re-engineered and Raymond came in to help with design details as well. With about 50% of the interior material already ordered, Raymond worked diligently to produce engineered drawings that allowed the material to be used and, at the same time, satisfy code and schedule requirements.

This was an “all hands on deck” scenario that ultimately proved successful. Raymond and the project team provided the client with quality engineered drawings that would be both functional and fulfil the aesthetic desire of the client. The end result is a quality product that the team can be proud of, and the SFSU community can enjoy.
